Ear infections
Q: Can you give oral antibotics for ear infection for a dog instead of ear drops. i have a dog that i can't put ear drops in. she was hit by a car several years ago and broke both legs and spent alot of time with treatment. since then unable to give any type of treatment. can 't even get a muzzle on her
A: Sometimes oral meds can work a bit. most of time most effective however whihc often will reduce pain/inflammation to allow you to place ear drops in would be low dose cortisone as well in addition to antibiotics orally which dont penetrate ears enough as do topicals directly applied.
Hepatitis in cats
Q: Thanks you for being so prompt in answering my question about giving my dog cassie benadryl. i now have another question. i hope you can help. my daughter's cat has just been diagnosed w/hepatitis. it is not contagious, her liver enzymes are elevated, but not dangerous at this time. x-rays also show her gall bladder does not look right. her x-rays from last summer should it looked abnormal, but the vet assumed it was because she had swallowed a leather shoe lace, had to have surgery to remove it. they are going to to a sonogram on her gall bladder tomorrow. do you have any idea what the problem might be? of course, my daughter is frantic. thanks for any information you can give me.
A: I would wait on comments until ultrasound done and interpreted. you could use some nice liver supplements like denosyl(ask at pet meds).

Lupis
Q: My dog has been dianosed wih lupis recently he is a ten year old lab mix, i was wondering if this is rare and how will it affect my dog and his lifespan
A: This is a fairly uncommon disease, but is an autoimmune disease where his body is attacking his own joints. it is usually treated with high doses of ccrtisone and related drugs, however there are side effects to them ; you may want to check out a holistic vet; i have used some supplements in my practice which has helped. my website is www.canineworld.com/drdym

Missed dose
Q: I ran out of heartgard about 2 onths ago and forgot to renew the prescritpion. is it safe to just re-start heartgard in my dog? or does she need to be tested first? thanks.
A: You could start the pill without a problem. at your next scheduled vet visit or yearly get his normal once yearly test. there are actually very old patients who i have diagnosed actual heartworm infection, and we put them on the preventative to cut down on reproduction of the existing adult worms in those cases we decide not to treat due to age, risk etc. it was only the old daily heartworm pills that you had to make sure your pet was negative before giving them.

Swollen leg causing toeing in
Q: I have a rescued mix breed dog estimated to be 6 or 7 years old weighing 48 lbs. she had a small swellin on her right front ankle, and i immediately took her to a vet. diagnosis - wait and see as nothing requiring immediate attention. it has swollen so much it has caused her foot to toe in dramatically. after two sets of x-rays, the vet (a second opinion agreed) stated it was not a tumor, but scar tissue or soft tissue swelling. rymedyl no long works, now on deramax. is there anything i can do to help alleviate discomfort - including different or additional meds, wrapping the leg (i've tried but not very good - either too tight or too loose), or alternative strategies. i love this dog a lot!
A: Tough for me to tell without seeing it but if you have been to see vet orthopedic specialist just to make sure, then i would consider homeopathic vet options www.theavh.org to find one in your area. many also offer phone consults

Perfect teeth but falling out
Q: My 9 year old dog has perfect teeth. no gum problems and no tarter. recently i have discovered that his front top two teeth are missing. is there something in his diet that i can change to prevent him from losing more teeth?
A: Some dogs do have tendency to lose teeth as they get older. just make sure on good natural diet like pet guard or innova or canidae. i feel that reason why these problems are so common is that we have gotten away from what dogs evolved to eat and that is meat and bone based diets. i would check out barf diet info at barf.com to learn more
