Ringworm treatment addition?Q: I know the common thought now is that the once hopeful treatment, program, does not cure ringworm. however, if you are not depending on program to do the job by itself, might it sometimes assist somewhat with a good ringworm topical treatment plan and house disinfecting? i heard that ringworm has a hard time reproducing without the chiton layer which program eliminates. also, could it help some pets ie., cats or dogs, young or old, more than others? (i have a four month old kitten.) A: It is controversial topic and i have heard opinions of many dermatologists on this one. probably cant hurt and might be useful in young kittens particularly those in cattery situation where ringworm is more prevalent. however by itself does not do job. but as you state can be part of more comprehensive ringworm control program which includes topical therapy, clipping, oral antifungals, etc

Temaril-pQ: Our 1.5 year old golden retriever has been itching for a while now. the vet gave her temaril- which we gave her, but she was urinating all over the house, even in the bed! i have been giving her only one a day instead of three, which stopped the urinating in the house. but it hasn't stopped the itching only for the day, at night its back. my question is should we get more of this medicine, or should we try a spray for her flaky irritated skin? Missed doseQ: I ran out of heartgard about 2 onths ago and forgot to renew the prescritpion. is it safe to just re-start heartgard in my dog? or does she need to be tested first? thanks. A: You could start the pill without a problem. at your next scheduled vet visit or yearly get his normal once yearly test. there are actually very old patients who i have diagnosed actual heartworm infection, and we put them on the preventative to cut down on reproduction of the existing adult worms in those cases we decide not to treat due to age, risk etc. it was only the old daily heartworm pills that you had to make sure your pet was negative before giving them.

Hepatitis in catsQ: Thanks you for being so prompt in answering my question about giving my dog cassie benadryl. i now have another question. i hope you can help. my daughter's cat has just been diagnosed w/hepatitis. it is not contagious, her liver enzymes are elevated, but not dangerous at this time. x-rays also show her gall bladder does not look right. her x-rays from last summer should it looked abnormal, but the vet assumed it was because she had swallowed a leather shoe lace, had to have surgery to remove it. they are going to to a sonogram on her gall bladder tomorrow. do you have any idea what the problem might be? of course, my daughter is frantic. thanks for any information you can give me. A: I would wait on comments until ultrasound done and interpreted. you could use some nice liver supplements like denosyl(ask at pet meds).
