Sudden deathQ: I had a 10 month old white boxer puppy. she was fine earlier in the afternoon. happy, healthy, playful. she was eating and drinking normally and exibited no signs of sickness. several hours later my husband found her dead. there were no signs of struggle, no blood, vomit, or foaming around the mouth. she seemed to have just fallen over dead while walking. we also have an adult dog in the same pen. she seems fine. no signs of illness. could it have been parvovirus or poison? A: Could have been viral or poisening or many possibilities. however in this breed i would place genetic heart defect at top of my list as cause of sudden death
ConfusedQ: I have a 15 month old cocker spaniel. i took her to the vet and they said not to use any over the counter flea treatments( like flea collar, etc) so i took it off and i shampooed her with a mild shampoo and now she has fleas again. i applied the frontline treatment they gave me but she is still not flea free. she is an indoor dog and i don't want to get them. how long does it take for the frontline to work and are over the counter flea shampoos and collars bad? help!!! thanks!!!! A: Frontline is itself an over the counter product and is very effective at controlling fleas. it usually begins to kill fleas within 18 hours of application. contolling a flea problem involves treating the pet, treating the house and treating the yard.

14 year old malteseQ: My dog cody has recently been having sezures. he falls on the floor and begains crying and convulsing . when i pick him up it stops. he seems confused. then he is fine. he has been short of breath for the last 2 weeks. because of his age i hesatate to take him to the vet and put him through any trauma. i would like him to pass at home with me, but i don't want him to suffer. does this sound like heart failure. he is a inside dog A: Cant tell what it is without seeing him. the fast breathing could be pain from a problem in his brain and not necessarily related to heart. usually with heart disease there is increased coughing in many cases. sorry to say but really should go to vet
InfectionQ: I have a female golden retriever recent heat cycle swelling on her female area loss of appetite incresed thurst and with uncontrolable licking for 3 days. swelling is down now no blood, but yellow discharge present. we changed the brand of dog food she has greatly increased her food intake and is interested in playing ball again. will this happen every heat cycle? we have foxtails in the yard and i have to keep the ears and toes cleaned out all the time. is there a chance a fox tail could be stuck in her skin? or maybe a urinary infection? is ther any ointment or rinses we can try? thank you ned A: Cant tell if it will happen with each heat cycle. i doubt a fox tail but have vet check if in doubt. if symptoms were more persistant then have urine checked at vet for uti
My dog is too weakQ: My dog stop eating since two days ago she won't drink any water since yesterday either and today she started to have this very thick saliva out of her mouth and she has lost a lot of weigt to. does she have rabies? A: You need to make an appointment right away to see a veterinarian to get a proper diagnosis.
Unusual furQ: My dog has recently grown a odd white fur on his left side and it has a black ring around it. i was wondering what it was because my friend said it might be scabies. A: I doubt it is scabies which causes intense itching in dogs. likely some sort of innocent hair follicle change, but you should take to vet to examine
Parvo-in pit bullQ: My pit bull was diagnosed with the parvo virus the other day when we took him to the vet and they told us to give him pedialite and gatorade he kept it doown and last night he pooped a little bit of blood and i was wanting to know if he will be alright and what that means A: Usually dogs with parvo virus are hospitilized and put on iv fluids and injectable antibiotics to prevent secondary infections. but there are different strains of parvo, etc in terms of severity of illness. very common with viral infections of intestines to have loose stool with someblood at times
