Addison's disease and pancreatitis
Q: My 24 lb mixed breed terrier dog was dx w/addison's disease in oct 2000 and with pancreatitis in march 2002. she gets a percorten v shot every 28 days. however, it is my understanding that prednisone can be contraindicated for the pancreatitis. is that correct? also, when she vomits bright yellow liquid (bile?), what is the best thing to do? i appreciate your help.
A: I like to fast dog for 24 hours who vomit and give an antiacid like pepcid ac at dose of 1/2 mg per pound once daily during the 24 hours, offer only smallamounts of fluids. then introduce bland diet. latest research is now showing that actually low dose pred may help pancreatitis in pets so i would not worry since vet community goes back and forth on this
Shop for: prednisone

Expiration dates
Q: Does hearguard have a shelf life beyond the expiration date? after giving my dog his monthly dose of heartguard, i noticed the expiration date was 3 months ago! is he protected or should i re-medicate?
A: Expiration dates are the point at which the manufacturer can no longer guarantee effectiveness of theproduct. you should not use any medication beyond it's expiration date. i would not re-medicate since there is a lingering effect if you have been giving heartgard each month. however, i would suggest you give in-date medication for the next dose.
Shop for: heartgard

Ticks
Q: What do i use for ticks on my dog,i don't have the fleas just ticks? she is a small dog about 35 lb.i had my yard and house sprayed two or three times and i'm stilling finding them on he and in the house. i never had this before and she is about 13 years old. thank you
A: Try good collar known as preventic collar from 1800petmeds

Epilepsy
Q: Our 5 yr. old, sunny, was diagnosed with epilepsy when he was 1 yr. old. he took phenobarb for a couple of yrs. but the seizures were still coming frequently and some were quite severe. we were living in california at that time. we left there and moved to alabama almost 2 yrs. ago. just before the move, our vet there added potassium bromide to his treatment. he is doing much better now! it has been just over a year since his last seizure! our vet has said we can cut back on the medication some, and we have. i just wonder how much should we keep cutting back? is it possible he has outgrown the epilepsy? also, do you think the change in climate made a difference? he is a pure bred siberian husky- is epilepsy common in this breed? thank you for your help! he is such a loving dog and we want to keep him healthy and with us as long as possible! we also have his dad (10 yrs old) and he doesn't have epilepsy. neither does his mother, or any of the other pups.
A: Epilepsy is very common in this breed and we often dont pinpoint why certain dogs develop this disorder. i would suspect that he will need to be on this medicine rest of his life which is fine as long as his blood levels and chemistries are checked periodically. if you want to try cutting down dose, needs to be done gradually under care of your vet in your area, but if things all well i would probably elect to keep things as they are

Hot spots
Q: My boy, noah, is eight years old. it seems that, every two to three years, only during the summer, he gets "hot spots". we have taken him to our vet. the vet, who has been his doc. since day one, gives him an injection of "o/c first?", some cephalexin 500 caps, and sends us home. now, this dog already has a thyroid issue. has been diagnosed for about a year with an underactive thyroid. he takes thyrozine, .8 mgs, twice a day. we are going on three weeks now, with this bout of "hot spots", an no results. he still bothers himself. it is starting to bother me. is there anything other than cortizone, to help relieve and heal my boy? we're very close, yet i find myself scolding him for irritating himself, so he gets more sensitive to my voice tones, well, he hides from me sometimes. i know it's just to chew on himself. this is going nowhere. please help comfort us! thank you for your time deb felts
A: Try topical sprays to area such as gentacin topical sprays to hot spots. can also use antihistamines at same time as low dose cortisone including benadryl at dose of 1/2 to 1 mg per pound orally twice daily. also consider fatty acid supplement long term for allergies such as brite coat xs from 1800petmeds. if persists, then consider blood or skin allergy test to find out what allergic to so vaccine can be made for best long term relief
Shop for: antihistamine, 1800petmeds

Oral rabies vaccine
Q: Is there a oral version of the rabies vaccine that can be given to my dog(rottweiler) although he is a great dog and has been trained he has a great fear of needles and becomes very aggressive when i need to muzzle him for this.. its to the point now that i need to have him sedated completely to accomplish this(which makes me feel terrible for days that i have to do this) although this only happpens once a year it would be nice if this type of vaccine is available for dogs as it is for wild/zoo animals. thanks jim
A: There is no oral form of the vaccine. you might also ask your veterinarian about the new once every 3 year rabies vaccine that certainly be helpful in your situation.
