Addison's disease and pancreatitisQ: My 24 lb mixed breed terrier dog was dx w/addison's disease in oct 2000 and with pancreatitis in march 2002. she gets a percorten v shot every 28 days. however, it is my understanding that prednisone can be contraindicated for the pancreatitis. is that correct? also, when she vomits bright yellow liquid (bile?), what is the best thing to do? i appreciate your help. A: I like to fast dog for 24 hours who vomit and give an antiacid like pepcid ac at dose of 1/2 mg per pound once daily during the 24 hours, offer only smallamounts of fluids. then introduce bland diet. latest research is now showing that actually low dose pred may help pancreatitis in pets so i would not worry since vet community goes back and forth on this

Hepatitis in catsQ: Thanks you for being so prompt in answering my question about giving my dog cassie benadryl. i now have another question. i hope you can help. my daughter's cat has just been diagnosed w/hepatitis. it is not contagious, her liver enzymes are elevated, but not dangerous at this time. x-rays also show her gall bladder does not look right. her x-rays from last summer should it looked abnormal, but the vet assumed it was because she had swallowed a leather shoe lace, had to have surgery to remove it. they are going to to a sonogram on her gall bladder tomorrow. do you have any idea what the problem might be? of course, my daughter is frantic. thanks for any information you can give me. A: I would wait on comments until ultrasound done and interpreted. you could use some nice liver supplements like denosyl(ask at pet meds).
Infected tailQ: My dog sassy has an infection at the base of her tail. she is still able to wag it, but it is nearly double in size compared to the rest of it. i am disabled and it is hard for me to get her to the vet, which i'm determined to do tomorrow. the vet said it sounded to be bacterial, which i have already taken her to see them in which they gave no meds for! what might the best option be? A: I don't understand why your vet did not prscribe oral antibiotics if it is bacterial. you may want to call them back or see a different vet. for now use topical neosporine or related antibiotic until you get an answer.

Temaril-pQ: Our 1.5 year old golden retriever has been itching for a while now. the vet gave her temaril- which we gave her, but she was urinating all over the house, even in the bed! i have been giving her only one a day instead of three, which stopped the urinating in the house. but it hasn't stopped the itching only for the day, at night its back. my question is should we get more of this medicine, or should we try a spray for her flaky irritated skin? A: Since temaril p does have cortisone in it this can make some dogs urinate excessively. perhaps try good antihistamine script like amitryptylline from vet in conjunction with good fatty acid supplement like brite coat xs as well as prozyme added to food from 1800petmeds. try 1800petmeds aloe vera and oatmeal conditioner and shampoo every few days as well
