Serious flea and tick controlQ: We have a yellow lab that seems to be a tick magnet and a slightly smaller german shepard aust. cattle dog that is less so. they spend a sizable amount of time out doors in a 1 acre area and the lab has multiple ticks removed daily. what would you reccommend. A: Myt favorite product is preventic collar which works great for 3 months as long as not submerged in water which inactivates it. other good choice is frontline plus from 1800petmeds Shop for: tick, preventic collar, 1800petmeds, frontline

Gas & moreQ: My dog, a 3 yr. old jack russel terrier, has a more than usual problem with gas, my god is it a problem. he eats grass a lot to make himself throw up, recently. today my wife said he had blood in his stool as well. what could cause these symtoms and what can we do to treat it? his gas was bad enough, smelled something terrible!! now, with the blood in his stool, we are more concerned.we've changed his food severial times in the last month, it dosen't seem to help.this has been going on now for a few months now, please help. thank you, sincerely, tatum A: Needsd complete workup at vet including stool check for intestinal parasites includign whipworms, hookworms and giardia which i like to check at outside lab. if all negative sometimes we will still worm with broad acting wormer like panacure just to make sure. might want to try low allery prescription diet like purina ha as well as adding prozyme from 1800petmeds o help with digestion. consider slippery elm from health food store for symptomatic relief of upset stomachs

Unusual furQ: My dog has recently grown a odd white fur on his left side and it has a black ring around it. i was wondering what it was because my friend said it might be scabies. A: I doubt it is scabies which causes intense itching in dogs. likely some sort of innocent hair follicle change, but you should take to vet to examine
16yr old cat very illQ: Hi, my 16 year old cat is very ill right now. i noticed her walking unsteady yesterday and now she won't even get up. she has tinted blood in her urine which leads me to believe she has a very bad urinary tract infection. i've contacted my vet, but he is out of town. he told me to give her some honey because she hasn't been eating or drinking at all and is very weak. after i spoke with him, i realized that i have antibiotics from last month that were for my dog. i can't stand to see her suffer, here is the name that is on the bottle it is abbreviated smztmp i also have a bottle of rimadyl 100mg. right now anything to help, can i give my cat a very small amount of either one of these to help ease her discomfort? thank-you A: Don't give rimadyl to cats. you could try 120 mg of the smz once daily but this antibiotic can occasionally cause side effects in cats as well as cause excessive drooling so i would stay away from unless at direction of your vet. really needs exam and blood work as could have other issues going on causing blood in urine like kidney failure.

Itchy earsQ: We have a 9 month old 9.5# bengal who seems to have the same allergies to grass & tree pollen as i do. can i give him benadryl? 1 to 2 mg per pound as you suggest for dogs? he sneezes occasionally and has sensitive ears. dosent seem to scratch much but i can tell they bother him by the way he holds them. A: I prefer chlortrimeton in cats at dose of 2 mg twice daily. if no help in a few weeks, then you could try instread benadryl at dose of 1/2 mg per pound twice daily. dose you mention is too high for cats
BreedingQ: I need to know how many times a day you can use one male dog for breeding. A: I only would do it once to twice
Perfect teeth but falling outQ: My 9 year old dog has perfect teeth. no gum problems and no tarter. recently i have discovered that his front top two teeth are missing. is there something in his diet that i can change to prevent him from losing more teeth? A: Some dogs do have tendency to lose teeth as they get older. just make sure on good natural diet like pet guard or innova or canidae. i feel that reason why these problems are so common is that we have gotten away from what dogs evolved to eat and that is meat and bone based diets. i would check out barf diet info at barf.com to learn more
