Addison's disease and pancreatitisQ: My 24 lb mixed breed terrier dog was dx w/addison's disease in oct 2000 and with pancreatitis in march 2002. she gets a percorten v shot every 28 days. however, it is my understanding that prednisone can be contraindicated for the pancreatitis. is that correct? also, when she vomits bright yellow liquid (bile?), what is the best thing to do? i appreciate your help. A: I like to fast dog for 24 hours who vomit and give an antiacid like pepcid ac at dose of 1/2 mg per pound once daily during the 24 hours, offer only smallamounts of fluids. then introduce bland diet. latest research is now showing that actually low dose pred may help pancreatitis in pets so i would not worry since vet community goes back and forth on this

Serious flea and tick controlQ: We have a yellow lab that seems to be a tick magnet and a slightly smaller german shepard aust. cattle dog that is less so. they spend a sizable amount of time out doors in a 1 acre area and the lab has multiple ticks removed daily. what would you reccommend. Uncontrollable at groomersQ: I have a five year old cocker spaniel who has never been very social with anyone but the family and sometmies not even with us. the only way i could get him groomed was to stay at the groomers and physically hold him so he could be cut - he growls at the groomer (and me), has snipped at the groomer (but never bitten her) and is in general what i can only call a coudgedty old man. he had seizures when he was much younger but has not had any for several years. his hair now looks like he belongs to scatchswatch what with all the mats. he also has skin problems which i have treated with oatmeal baths that seem to sooth the itch. am at the point of trying to shave his hair off myself - what would you suggest? he is a beautiful dog and i love him to pieces but he is certainly more than i can handle at the groomers anymore. A: Perhaps see vet who has grooming services so they can give him mild sedative so can be clipped correctly. unfortunately have to avoid such common sedatives prescribed orally by vets such as acepromazine which can actually pricipitate seizures in susceptible pets. so best for injectable sedation
How often to bathQ: Sasha is a 8 month old rottweiler who is a house dog but gets walked frequently and plays in the backyard. i would like to know is it o.k to bath her every two weeks or as needed. i have bought oatmeal shampoo,but i noticed she itches alot i thought it may be from bathing so much or mosquito bites,no signs of fleas or ticks.
