Infection
Q: I have a female golden retriever recent heat cycle swelling on her female area loss of appetite incresed thurst and with uncontrolable licking for 3 days. swelling is down now no blood, but yellow discharge present. we changed the brand of dog food she has greatly increased her food intake and is interested in playing ball again. will this happen every heat cycle? we have foxtails in the yard and i have to keep the ears and toes cleaned out all the time. is there a chance a fox tail could be stuck in her skin? or maybe a urinary infection? is ther any ointment or rinses we can try? thank you ned
A: Cant tell if it will happen with each heat cycle. i doubt a fox tail but have vet check if in doubt. if symptoms were more persistant then have urine checked at vet for uti

How much worm medication
Q: I have a dog that is over 50 lbs and i bought the erliworm tabs, it says 1 tablet for every 4 lbs. so that means i need to give my dog 12 tablets? mary
A: That is correct. however, you can mix the chewable tablets in with your pets food for ease of administration.
Shop for: erliworm

Pill comparision
Q: I am trying to compare the various pill meds for fleas and ticks . the cost of the treatment is one of the things i'm considering along with how effective it is .
A: I am not familiar with a pill that is effective against fleas and ticks. if you want a tablet, you can use program. however, this medication is for fleas only. as long as your pet is a dog, you could then use a preventic collar for tick control.
Shop for: tick, preventic collar

Drug interaction
Q: I haven't gotten the results i want from frontline top spot. is it safe to give my dog program pills (lufeneron) one week after treating with frontline?
A: Yes, you can use program along with the frontline topspot
Shop for: frontline, frontline topspot

Addison's disease and pancreatitis
Q: My 24 lb mixed breed terrier dog was dx w/addison's disease in oct 2000 and with pancreatitis in march 2002. she gets a percorten v shot every 28 days. however, it is my understanding that prednisone can be contraindicated for the pancreatitis. is that correct? also, when she vomits bright yellow liquid (bile?), what is the best thing to do? i appreciate your help.
A: I like to fast dog for 24 hours who vomit and give an antiacid like pepcid ac at dose of 1/2 mg per pound once daily during the 24 hours, offer only smallamounts of fluids. then introduce bland diet. latest research is now showing that actually low dose pred may help pancreatitis in pets so i would not worry since vet community goes back and forth on this
Shop for: prednisone

Ear mites
Q: I have 2 dogs, one a golden retreiver and a small poodle type mixed breed. they had ear mites and i put in ear-rite insecticidal ear wash. it seemed to do the job for awhile then they came back and i did it again. but i think they didn't get taken care of totally. when i brought my cat in they gave him something they squeezed on his neck. is there something like that, that i could just order on line?
A: I doubt the ear mites persist as usually once treated they dont tend to rcur. i would have vet exam of ear and microscopic exam of any discharge to rule out mites from other yeast or bacterial infections of ear. but product you ask about is called revolution which can be preventative against ear mites
Shop for: ear mites, revolution

Confused
Q: I have a 15 month old cocker spaniel. i took her to the vet and they said not to use any over the counter flea treatments( like flea collar, etc) so i took it off and i shampooed her with a mild shampoo and now she has fleas again. i applied the frontline treatment they gave me but she is still not flea free. she is an indoor dog and i don't want to get them. how long does it take for the frontline to work and are over the counter flea shampoos and collars bad? help!!! thanks!!!!
A: Frontline is itself an over the counter product and is very effective at controlling fleas. it usually begins to kill fleas within 18 hours of application. contolling a flea problem involves treating the pet, treating the house and treating the yard.
