Infected tailQ: My dog sassy has an infection at the base of her tail. she is still able to wag it, but it is nearly double in size compared to the rest of it. i am disabled and it is hard for me to get her to the vet, which i'm determined to do tomorrow. the vet said it sounded to be bacterial, which i have already taken her to see them in which they gave no meds for! what might the best option be? A: I don't understand why your vet did not prscribe oral antibiotics if it is bacterial. you may want to call them back or see a different vet. for now use topical neosporine or related antibiotic until you get an answer.
Hair loss due to itchingQ: We adopted this pup from the pound about two months ago. she sort of looks like toto but a little larger. never having had a terrier before, do they have skin problems. is their a diet that might work for her. she is on pro plan chicken with my other dog. we have bathed her and used a fungicide, and malesab pads on the trouble spots. not at the same time. anything else we can do? A: I like california natural lamb and rice diet for allergic dogs by natura pet foods.
DiarrheaQ: Good morning, my 7 year female doberman has been having loose stools and diarrhea for a period of about two weeks, there is a new baby in the house not sure if it that is what is effecting her or not :( i see in a previous question and answer you said to fast them for a period of 24 hours and a treatment of slippery elm, how much slippery elm should be given. thank you in advance. karen A: Follow directions given for people. no side effects. also see dr. pitcairn's book called dr. pitcairns guide to natural health for dogs and cats which goes into more detail
Heartworm prescriptionsQ: My vet refuses to give me a prescription for heartworm medicine, unless i put my dog through blood tests for heart worms. she has been on heart worm medicine all of her life, and is very healthy. my personal feeling is that he wants me to only buy the heart worm medicine from him, so he makes it difficult for me. A: If your veterinarian has never asked you to give your dog a heartworm test ih the past and has sold you the product, your feelings are probably very genuine.
Missed doseQ: I ran out of heartgard about 2 onths ago and forgot to renew the prescritpion. is it safe to just re-start heartgard in my dog? or does she need to be tested first? thanks. A: You could start the pill without a problem. at your next scheduled vet visit or yearly get his normal once yearly test. there are actually very old patients who i have diagnosed actual heartworm infection, and we put them on the preventative to cut down on reproduction of the existing adult worms in those cases we decide not to treat due to age, risk etc. it was only the old daily heartworm pills that you had to make sure your pet was negative before giving them.

Addison's disease and pancreatitisQ: My 24 lb mixed breed terrier dog was dx w/addison's disease in oct 2000 and with pancreatitis in march 2002. she gets a percorten v shot every 28 days. however, it is my understanding that prednisone can be contraindicated for the pancreatitis. is that correct? also, when she vomits bright yellow liquid (bile?), what is the best thing to do? i appreciate your help. A: I like to fast dog for 24 hours who vomit and give an antiacid like pepcid ac at dose of 1/2 mg per pound once daily during the 24 hours, offer only smallamounts of fluids. then introduce bland diet. latest research is now showing that actually low dose pred may help pancreatitis in pets so i would not worry since vet community goes back and forth on this

Pill comparisionQ: I am trying to compare the various pill meds for fleas and ticks . the cost of the treatment is one of the things i'm considering along with how effective it is . A: I am not familiar with a pill that is effective against fleas and ticks. if you want a tablet, you can use program. however, this medication is for fleas only. as long as your pet is a dog, you could then use a preventic collar for tick control.
