Licks front dog paws.Q: I have a blind overweight bassett hound and she licks her front paws all the time. she has licked them so much that she has a growth or callus on them. why and what is this? A: Could be nervous problem or more likely allergies which is very common in this breed either to inhalent allergens like mold, dust, grasses, etc and/or food allergies
Temaril-pQ: Our 1.5 year old golden retriever has been itching for a while now. the vet gave her temaril- which we gave her, but she was urinating all over the house, even in the bed! i have been giving her only one a day instead of three, which stopped the urinating in the house. but it hasn't stopped the itching only for the day, at night its back. my question is should we get more of this medicine, or should we try a spray for her flaky irritated skin? A: Since temaril p does have cortisone in it this can make some dogs urinate excessively. perhaps try good antihistamine script like amitryptylline from vet in conjunction with good fatty acid supplement like brite coat xs as well as prozyme added to food from 1800petmeds. try 1800petmeds aloe vera and oatmeal conditioner and shampoo every few days as well

Do i still need heartworm with biospot?Q: I changed from using a flea and tick collar and interceptor to using biospot. it says it takes care of mosquitoes, so should i still use the interceptor? thanks. A: One of the enemy might sneak through and bite your dogs. be safe, use the interceptor or another heartworm preventative.

Infected tailQ: My dog sassy has an infection at the base of her tail. she is still able to wag it, but it is nearly double in size compared to the rest of it. i am disabled and it is hard for me to get her to the vet, which i'm determined to do tomorrow. the vet said it sounded to be bacterial, which i have already taken her to see them in which they gave no meds for! what might the best option be? A: I don't understand why your vet did not prscribe oral antibiotics if it is bacterial. you may want to call them back or see a different vet. for now use topical neosporine or related antibiotic until you get an answer.
Rabies vaccineQ: I have a ten year old male shari mix. he has always had all his shot at the vet. now we are retired and in arizona instead of california where his regular vet is. i would like to know if i can get his shots at the local feed store and give them to him myself to save money? is the medication safe bought at a feed store? i got him his rabies shot at the local animal shelter and he needs the rest of his yearly shots. we board him in california when we go to visit our family there. so my question is will kennels in other states recognize that he is up to date on his shots if i bring a copy of the recite and his rabies cert.? thank you pamela so deets A: I would avoid parvo distemper shots in this aged dog as he most definitely has adequate immunity from prior shots. all vet schools now recommend every 3 year shots at a minimum to most adult dogs and cats for most of the common diseases
