Skunks
Q: What should i use to get the smell of skunk out of my dogs when they get sprayed ? i have a golden retriever who gets sprayed atleast 4 times a summer and he smells for months.
A: Great product called skunk off. if not available then could bathe in tomato juice
Sores on both cat and dog
Q: We have a 4 year oldyellow tabby cat (he is an inside/outside cat that does hunt) and a 6 year old bischon. they both get raised scab-like areas on their bodies. my dog has even chewed at one area so much that it is raw and bleeding. i think he may have some skin allergy, but i have already been giving him an antihistimine for this. both animals have been given shots for a skin infection in the past--what is that and could they both have the same thing?
A: Tough to say. likely allergies but should have vet exam to rule out skin parasites as well as mange, etc fleas, etc.
What product should i use
Q: I have 3 dogs weighing about 25, 60, 75 lbs. i live in a highly wooded area and my dogs run the property. other then commercial sprays to spray the property what products do you recommend for fleas and ticks? i need something that is waterproof.
A: Use frontline plus as a monthly, topical, flea and tick preventative.
Shop for: tick, frontline plus, frontline
Addison's disease and pancreatitis
Q: My 24 lb mixed breed terrier dog was dx w/addison's disease in oct 2000 and with pancreatitis in march 2002. she gets a percorten v shot every 28 days. however, it is my understanding that prednisone can be contraindicated for the pancreatitis. is that correct? also, when she vomits bright yellow liquid (bile?), what is the best thing to do? i appreciate your help.
A: I like to fast dog for 24 hours who vomit and give an antiacid like pepcid ac at dose of 1/2 mg per pound once daily during the 24 hours, offer only smallamounts of fluids. then introduce bland diet. latest research is now showing that actually low dose pred may help pancreatitis in pets so i would not worry since vet community goes back and forth on this
Shop for: prednisone
Pill comparision
Q: I am trying to compare the various pill meds for fleas and ticks . the cost of the treatment is one of the things i'm considering along with how effective it is .
A: I am not familiar with a pill that is effective against fleas and ticks. if you want a tablet, you can use program. however, this medication is for fleas only. as long as your pet is a dog, you could then use a preventic collar for tick control.
Shop for: tick, preventic collar
Rabies vaccine
Q: I have a ten year old male shari mix. he has always had all his shot at the vet. now we are retired and in arizona instead of california where his regular vet is. i would like to know if i can get his shots at the local feed store and give them to him myself to save money? is the medication safe bought at a feed store? i got him his rabies shot at the local animal shelter and he needs the rest of his yearly shots. we board him in california when we go to visit our family there. so my question is will kennels in other states recognize that he is up to date on his shots if i bring a copy of the recite and his rabies cert.? thank you pamela so deets
A: I would avoid parvo distemper shots in this aged dog as he most definitely has adequate immunity from prior shots. all vet schools now recommend every 3 year shots at a minimum to most adult dogs and cats for most of the common diseases

14 year old maltese
Q: My dog cody has recently been having sezures. he falls on the floor and begains crying and convulsing . when i pick him up it stops. he seems confused. then he is fine. he has been short of breath for the last 2 weeks. because of his age i hesatate to take him to the vet and put him through any trauma. i would like him to pass at home with me, but i don't want him to suffer. does this sound like heart failure. he is a inside dog
A: Cant tell what it is without seeing him. the fast breathing could be pain from a problem in his brain and not necessarily related to heart. usually with heart disease there is increased coughing in many cases. sorry to say but really should go to vet
